Cabling Installation Process

cable technicianThere are numerous steps that must be followed by a cable installer to make sure that their installation is successful. There are generally six stages of the process, all of which a cable layer needs to be familiar with. The design process is how the area will look, where the wires will run and what functions will need to be performed. This will determine layout, type of wire, and how to best influence functionality.

The installation process is, well, the installation process. This is when wires are laid, above and/or below ground. The components, such as central CPU’s is also installed at this point. Depending on what kind of cable is already in use, the functions it was designed for and its sheer quantity, the project may take a few days to several months. Having cables already in a building is not always more efficient time wise than having a clean slate to work with. This is especially true if the cables were laid before color coding was instituted or if they are rusted, non functional or out dated.

After the new wires are placed and connected, a testing procedure happens. This ensures that the cables are doing what they are supposed to do. A special meter is used to test for speed tolerance. Most of the time the tolerance is as it is supposed to be, but when it is not steps are taken to try to determine the error. Different levels of CAT wiring have separate tests which are performed.

The first step which is usually taken is to replace the terminals on both ends of the cable. This is where troubleshooting begins. A short within a terminal or a malfunctioning terminal will either block or reduce the speed of a cable. After this is done the cable is rechecked for speed.

When the replacement of terminals does not fix the problem, other potential problems are looked for. Every inch of the cable will be checked for breaks, kinks, cuts, and burns. On occasion, when a cable is placed on top of another cable, the heat from one of the cables will burn through the sheathing of another. This impacts the tolerance of the whole unit and increases the chance of fires and other electrical problems. If, and this is extremely rare, none of these is determined as the cause of the low performance then the cable must be replaced and re-laid.

Documentation of every aspect of the process thus far occurs. Everything from the amount of wire used to the troubleshooting processes is written down. This will be used for accounting purposes for the installation company. It also serves as an invoice for the company which had the cable installed and can be used as protection if there are any unforeseen issues in the future.

The final step is restoration. This also includes maintaining the wires and system. If a system becomes outdated, as is frequently seen in technological fields, then new components will be added to bring it up to date. Though the guidelines are the same for jobs, each job is a bit different and will have its own challenges. This is why it is vital for the cable layer to be involved in each step, so they are aware of any unique circumstances which pertain to a project.
