What’s Required of Cable Installers?

career as a cabling installerIt may not seem like it, but a career as a cable installer is quite a big responsibility. If an installer is not thorough, then the entire system could malfunction, circuits could fry, and in some cases, fires can be started. The job involves more than just connecting two cables and calling it a day. In fact, the field encompasses so much that the expertise required goes well beyond hardware.

A cable installer is often the person a client actually meets. Though the details of the project often get sent through a general database, the installer is the one who shows up, speaks with the clients and makes sure that they have every detail exactly to the clients specifications. The ability to provide customer service is essential, and though the processes used can be taught, the ability to be good with people is almost innate. Steps can be taken to improve communication, and this is something that is recommended for anyone, in any field, who has difficulties with communication.

Along these same lines, the ability to listen, truly listen, and to comprehend what is being said are required to ensure that the client and technician are on the same page. A sufficient knowledge of English, or whichever language is primary in the country being worked in, will keep misunderstandings to a minimum. The language requirements include grammar, spelling, the meaning of common words, and sentence composition.

Problem solving skills are priceless in an industry where everyday brings something unexpected. This involves taking what a person knows and applying it in new ways. When considering options, the cost versus the effectiveness comes into play frequently. These choices must be conveyed to other members of the team, another reason effective speaking and active listening skills are so important.

Though a high school diploma is sufficient for most careers as a cable installer, the level of mathematics needed for the field is often above the level of general math. Basic addition and subtraction is used on a daily basis, but so are geometry, algebra, statistics, and calculus. It is beneficial to everyone in this career field to take a class in one or more of these. Having mathematical proficiency makes the problem solving aspect of the job, that much simpler.

Another key to remember is that having experience of public safety, and the requirements of keeping the public secure will be beneficial when the time comes to move into a supervisory role. It seems like a lot of policies to memorize and a whole new set of strategies to implement but, these policies exist for a reason. They have been tried and tested to ensure the public trusts those who are responsible for keeping them connected.

The job does offer a certain level of independence and integrity. Many of the hours worked are alone or in a small group. There isn’t always going to be someone looking over the shoulder of their employee to make sure the job is getting done correctly. This drive must come from within. An above average attention to detail will ensure that the tasks are done right the first time.

No one should be deterred from a career as a cable installer simply because it take work. The skills are universal and translate across many career fields. It is not until one challenges themselves that the true potential of that person can be fully unlocked.
